While on Amazon, I noticed that there were things in my shopping cart, and that I did not put them in there. They turned out to be two books on Reiki healing, placed there about a week ago, but not purchased on my account.
WTH? That's freaking unsettling.
I delete all my credit card options and notify Amazon. They respond, saying that a "third party" somehow accessed my account, and no purchases were made, but they shut down my account to be on the safe side and I'll have to start a new one next time I order something. Not a huge inconvenience (especially as I've done it before) except that my wish list is gone. :( Then they rattle off a bunch of nonsense about safety tips. Dudes, nobody has that account info. No one could possibly know my password; it's a word I made up and a set of numbers that has no obvious significance to me. I don't fall for scam e-mails. So how the fuck did this happen?
My theory: Amazon's system screwed up. Something similar happened a couple of years ago when I found myself in someone else's account for no reason (and couldn't get into my own, which is when I started the second one). Further evidence is the random healing books they were set to buy and the fact that my card wasn't used. I think someone found themselves in the same situation I was in before; went to buy the books in their cart and realized the password wasn't working and it wasn't their e-mail address, and the whole thing was some kind of glitch. These things happen.
Seriously, if someone is willing to pay my student loans, they can have my identity.
When I do get around to buying stuff again, I'm setting up my account on my shiny new gmail address.
ETA: The third party was my MOM. Apparently I logged on to Amazon when I was using the Dell, and forgot to log out. :/
